Music
Choirs are available to all students K-8. These choirs
provide special music at worship services on a rotating basis.
The Junior Choir (grades 6-8) participates in the Lutheran
Schools Music Festival in the spring. Students in grades 5-8 are
offered an opportunity to participate in band. Band concerts are
offered 2-3 times per year and the band also participates in the
Lutheran Schools Music Festival. Selected artwork from all
levels is displayed at the Lutheran Schools Music and Art
Festival in the spring of each year at Lutheran High School.
Athletics
Athletic opportunities are provided in the following team
sports:
Soccer – Boys and girls in grades 5-8 participate in this
fall league play.
Volleyball – Girls in grades 5-8 participate in this fall
league play.
Basketball – Boys and Girls participate on four separate
teams (7/8 grade boys, 7/8 grade girls, 5/6 grade boys, and 5/6
grade girls).
Cheerleading - Girls in grades 7 and 8 may try-out for
the Varsity Cheerleading squad. All girls in grades 5 and 6 are
invited to participate in the Reserve Cheerleading squad.
Since a number of our students
participate in township baseball league, we do not currently
offer a spring sport. All students must maintain academic
eligibility to remain on an athletic team.
Drama
Advent Worship Services – Students in all grades
participate in one of three Advent worship services in December
each year. All services include the telling of the Christmas
story and a number of familiar Christmas hymns. One service is
led by students in grades 6-8. A second service is led by
students in Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, and Kindergarten. A
third service is led by students in grades 1-5. All services
include speaking and choral parts.
Musicals and Plays
In some years, the school also offers a school musical that
includes all students. At other times, the second drama option
is offered at three different grade levels – musicals for grades
PS through 5 and a play for grades 6-8.
Academic Competition
National Geography Week – Students in grades 1-4 and 5-8
participate in competitions during National Geography Week in
the fall. In addition, a competition determines a school
champion who will take part in the Geography Bee sponsored by
the National Geographic Society.
Indiana Academic Super Bowl – Students in grades 6-8 may
participate in the Academic Super Bowl sponsored by Purdue
University in the spring of each year. Team members are involved
in research, study, and review in preparation for the
competition. Topics change yearly.
Lutheran Schools Bible Quiz
– A book of the Bible is studied in detail each fall. Six
Lutheran schools from Central Indiana compete each fall.
Spelling Bees – St. John
uses the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee lists and has a
competition for the 5th through 8th grade school representative
to the local spelling bee.
As preparation for this, spelling bees are conducted in the 1st
through 4th grade classrooms and the winners compete in
divisional bees in the spring.
Scrabble – St. John offers a Scrabble Club for students
in grades 6-8. Teams from this club compete at the state and
national level. St. John Lutheran School hosts the Indiana State
Scrabble Competition each March. A St. John team was the state
champion in 2009. |
