SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Game shows that offer million dollar prizes seem to be all over the TV these days. Frankly, I am not much interested in watching someone else win a million dollars. At one time, the big prizes on game shows were much lower. I’m old enough to remember when a wrong question by a panelist on “What’s My Line” earned the contestant $10. The prize money was so low. I suspect people participated just for the competition. With a million dollars on the line today, I am sure they are now drawn by the money.
I remember from years ago a fictional show called “The Millionaire”. In each episode, someone received a ‘cashier’s check in the amount of one million dollars”. The recipients were not told who the gift came from or why they were selected. They didn’t have to do anything to earn it. There was just a knock on the door by a man with an unexpected tax-free gift. The story followed how each recipient was affected by this unexpected fortune. As you can imagine, some turned out very good, while others turned out not so good.
In his First Letter, Peter says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (2:9). We don’t have to wait for the knock on the door. We are chosen by God. We did nothing to earn it. We did not deserve it. Because He loves us. Because He promised. He gave us His Son. Through Jesus’ death on the cross, our sins are forgiven. God has given us a gift worth far more than a million dollars. He has given us our very lives. Because of this great gift, we declare His praise and share His message.
