SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
Based on a number of studies, some researchers believe that we are born with only six emotions “hard-wired” into the brain. They include joy, surprise, sadness, fear, anger, and disgust. That leaves the following ten that have to be taught: humility, forgiveness, empathy, optimism, compassion, sympathy, patience, shame, cooperation, and gratitude. According to the study, it is important for parents and teachers to know this, so we can better understand how to teach our children, especially in those rare “teachable moments”. As they get older, children should have these emotions because it helps them take better control of their own learning.
I don’t know the religious background of the researchers, but I couldn’t help but notice a similarity between this list of “teachable emotions” and the fruits of the Holy Spirit that we are looking at this year. As the Holy Spirit acts in our lives, our faith is expressed in many ways. Paul lists some of these in his letter to Galatians when he says, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (v 22-23). This list sounds a lot like the emotions listed above.
I always find it fascinating when science seems to confirm what God tells us in His Word. I have long believed that the more we discover about this world we live in, the more we discover just how amazing Our God is.
