SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT THIS WEEK
I don’t watch a lot of first-run movies, but I do have my list of favorites over the years. I especially like certain movie lines that just seem to stick with me. Some of my favorites are “We’re gonna need a bigger boat”; What are you prepared to do?”; and “Yeah, I can live with that.” Although not spoken, another favorite line shows up in print. “Objects in rear view are closer than they appear.” Considering the movie that one appears in, the words are a complete understatement. I am sure everyone has favorites.
The most impactful movie line, however, is in the movie, “The Passion of the Christ.” Jesus is on the cross and He lifts His head to heaven to say, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” It is impactful because it really happened, and that line has been shared from generation to generation for many years.
We are born in sin, and that sin separates us from God. We could try, but never succeed in earning God’s forgiveness. In grace, He sent His Son, Jesus, into the world, so that His death on the cross would save us from eternal punishment. Jesus prayed that forgiveness would be extended to all, even to those who were putting Him on the cross. It is a “line” that will shout through eternity. And today, we praise God that it is extended to us.
