School News: Jan. 10, 2017

It is the goal of every parent to teach our children to be kind. The more I think about it, though, I am not sure that “kindness” is just an action, but rather a condition of the heart. This is especially true of the kindness that Jesus shows us.

Look at Titus 3, “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy..” Then look at Ephesians 2, “..He raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

Teaching children to be kind goes beyond just giving them a set of actions to take. I think it means teaching them about the love of God as expressed in the gift of His Son, Jesus. Teach only the actions and they may soon disappear. Allow God to set the heart right, and true kindness and kind acts will flow from there.
