SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT THIS WEEK

I have made a lot of promises in my life. I have tried to keep them as best I could, but I admit that I have fallen short far too often. Some were made without thinking, so not fulfilling them was simply a matter of forgetting. Some were made in a vague way, so not fulfilling them meant squeezing around exactly what was promised. Some were made in all sincerity, but I just came up short for one reason or another. It is important to remember that even though I “tried my best”, there was always someone on the other side of that promise that I let down.  Keeping promises is a hard thing to do.

The spiritual fruit of “faithfulness” could be defined in a number of ways, but I like to define it as “keeping one’s promises”. When the Bible tells me that “God is faithful”, I am reminded that God has always kept His promises to me. Actually, He is the only one who has always done what He said He would do. As the apostles preached, “And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus.” (Acts 13).

Because God is faithful, our salvation is secure. He promised from the very beginning that He would send a Savior to secure our forgiveness and do for us what we could not do for ourselves. He fulfilled that promise in Jesus. We pray that His Spirit would work that same faithfulness in our lives that we share with others.
