SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT THIS WEEK

I am part of that generation that sang, “Give peace a chance.” It was an ideal, a sincere desire on the part of many who said it. If we could just harness the good we found in each other, and focus on that, that would usher in peace. It seemed to make sense. As I grew older, however, I realized that peace is not something that comes from simply controlling the outward actions of other people. It is something that must be in the heart.

I think true peace can only come when we can grasp that there is something bigger than us and that we can hold on to that something even when everything is crashing in around us. Jesus says, “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”  (John 17:3).

When we talk about peace as a fruit of the Spirit, we could talk about how to produce peace in ourselves and mandate it in others. I prefer, however, to recognize peace as a precious gift of God to our hearts, given because His Son, Jesus, died for us even when we could not live in peace on our own. May that peace guide our hearts as we live this life for Him.
