St. John offers a variety of opportunities for academic competition each year.
Junior Academic Super Bowl
A select team of students in grades 6-8 represents St. John in this state-wide competition sponsored by Purdue University. A specific topic is explored each year and questions are asked in four subject areas: History, Science, Literature, and Math.
National Geographic Geography Bee
Students in grades 5-8 compete to represent St. John in the Geography Bee sponsored annually by the National Geographic Society. They prepare for this by participation in National Geography Week activities each November. Students in grades 1-4 also participate in Geography Week activities and competitions.
Spelling Bee
Students in grades 5-8 compete to represent St. John in the annual Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee. A local competition is held to determine our School Spelling Champion. Students in Grades 1-4 also participate in a Spelling Bee in the spring of each year.
Sci-Fest
Students in Grades 1-8 participate in the Sci-Fest sponsored each year by the Central Indiana Lutheran Schools. This problem-solving competition involves a team of 2-3 students working to solve a challenge placed before them. Winners of the St. John Sci-Fest represent the school at the district level.
School Scrabble
Scrabble is much more than just a game at St. John. Students in grades 5-8 are encouraged to participate on the St. John Scrabble team. St. John hosts the Indiana State Scrabble Tournament each year and also sends two or three teams to the National Scrabble Championship in Orlando, FL each year. Students in grades 3-4 prepare for this by participating in Word Wizards.
